Easy 3-Ingredient Sour Cream Dip for Veggies, Chips & More

5 from 1 vote

My fabulously fresh, spectacularly speedy 3-Ingredient Chive and Sour Cream Dip recipe is the easiest appetizer you’ll ever make. This simple, lemony dip is the upgrade your game day spread has been missing!

A bowl of creamy white dip topped with chopped chives sits on a table. Fresh chives, cucumbers, carrots, cherry tomatoes, and a striped towel are in the background.

If you have 5 minutes to spare, you have enough time to make my easy sour cream dip. It’s even easier to make than my favorite tahini sauce, plus it’s safe for my friends with nut and seed allergies. Whether you use it for chips, crudites, or buffalo chicken wings, its cool, creamy brightness is always welcome.

Ingredients & Substitutions

Ingredients on a white surface: a bowl of sour cream, whole lemon, bunch of chives, red pepper grinder, measuring spoon with salt. Each item is labeled with text describing its name.
  • Sour Cream – Make sure to use full-fat sour cream for the best flavor. You can also swap in Middle Eastern labna, French crème fraîche, or even plain Greek yogurt if needed.
  • Lemon Juice & Zest – Using both fresh citrus juice and zest ensures a fantastically light and bright flavor profile. Remember to only zest the bright yellow parts of the fruit, since the white pith is bitter.
  • Chives – These dainty little alliums add a gentle oniony flavor and a nice pop of color. Can’t do onions? Swap in chopped fresh dill!
  • Salt & Black Pepper – Okay, these are *technically* two extra ingredients in our 3-ingredient sour cream dip, but they’re kitchen staples that are only added to taste, so I figured you’d forgive me. 😉 Use fine sea salt or kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper for the best results.

Sour Cream Varieties From Around The Globe

While sour cream is the classic choice for creamy dips, several other cultured dairy products work beautifully, or sometimes even better depending on the flavor and texture you want!

A clear glass bowl filled with several scoops of thick, white, creamy sour cream, on a light gray surface.
  • Sour cream is tangy, light, and slightly thick, making it the most familiar base for cold dips. It has a mild acidity and a creamy texture that blends easily with herbs, spices, and mix-ins. Because it’s relatively soft, it’s best for dips that you want to feel smooth and scoopable.
  • Crème fraîche is richer and silkier than sour cream, with a higher fat content and a milder, less tangy flavor. It has a higher fat content, which means it doesn’t curdle over heat and holds its shape beautifully. If you want a more luxurious dip, crème fraîche is an excellent upgrade. You can substitute it for sour cream at a 1:1 ratio. Just expect a slightly milder tang and a richer mouthfeel.
  • Labneh (strained Middle Eastern yogurt) is thick, tangy, and almost spreadable, like a cross between Greek yogurt and soft cheese. It makes an exceptionally creamy, bright dip on its own or mixed with citrus, herbs and spices. Feel free to use it as a 1:1 sour cream substitute.
  • Greek yogurt is tangy, thick, relatively low-fat and high in protein, making it a healthier alternative to sour cream. It’s slightly more acidic and not quite as rich, so dips made with Greek yogurt will taste brighter and slightly less indulgent. You can use it 1:1 in place of sour cream; if you want a richer flavor, blend it with a spoonful of mayonnaise or a splash of cream.
  • Mexican crema sits somewhere between sour cream and crème fraîche on the flavor spectrum, but is thin enough to be pourable. It’s mildly tangy and lightly salted, with a clean dairy flavor. Because of its looser consistency, it’s best used to help thin out thicker dips, or for turning dip recipes into salad dressings or sauces.

Optional Variations & Dietary Adaptations

  • Dairy-Free/Vegan – Use dairy-free sour cream or plain unsweetened coconut yogurt as the base. Add a little extra lemon juice to balance the richness, and whisk in 1-2 teaspoons of olive oil to help mimic the creaminess of real sour cream.
  • Lightened-Up – Swap half (or all) of the sour cream for Greek yogurt. It keeps the dip thick and tangy while lowering the fat and calories and boosting the protein. If the dip becomes too tart, soften it with a teaspoon of honey or a splash of cream.
  • Add Fresh Herbs – Try adding dill for a cool, bright note, parsley for freshness, or basil for a hint of sweetness. A mix of chives, dill, and parsley gives the dip a ranch dressing vibe.
  • Garlicky – Stir in one small grated garlic clove for a slightly spicier, more savory flavor. If you prefer something milder, use roasted garlic or ½ teaspoon garlic powder for a lightly sweet, slightly caramelized taste.
  • Creamy Feta Dip: Stir in 2-3 tablespoons of crumbled feta for a tangy, salty boost. It adds rich brininess and a bit of texture, turning the dip into more of a Mediterranean-inspired spread.
  • Cucumber Dip: Add ¼ cup of finely grated cucumber (well-squeezed to remove excess moisture). This gives it a cool, refreshing tzatziki vibe that’s perfect with veggies or pita.
  • Horseradish Kick: Mix in ½–1 teaspoon of prepared horseradish for a sharp, punchy edge. It’s especially great for serving alongside roasted potatoes, grilled meats, or seafood.
  • Spicy – Add a pinch of cayenne, chopped jalapeño, Aleppo pepper, or a swirl of hot sauce for a little kick.

Expert Tips & Tricks

  • Consistency control. For a thicker, sturdier dip, use full-fat sour cream or strain it for about 20 minutes in a fine-mesh strainer to remove excess moisture. If you prefer a thinner, drizzle-style sauce, swap in Mexican crema or whisk in a splash of milk, buttermilk, or lemon juice until it reaches your ideal texture.
  • Use fresh citrus. Lemon zest packs far more brightness than juice alone, and bottled juice can’t compare to fresh. For the most aromatic dip, zest the lemon fresh right over the bowl so the oils fall directly into the mixture.
  • Balance the acidity. Lemon juice brightens the dip, but too much can make it taste sharp. If it becomes overly tangy, mellow it out with a spoonful of crème fraîche, a dollop of mayonnaise, or a pinch of sugar to rebalance the flavors.
  • Fresh chives are delicate, so chop and add them right before serving to keep their flavor vibrant and their color bright. If you’re making the dip ahead, stir in the chives at the last minute.
  • Season gradually. Salt intensifies as the dip sits. Start with a small amount, chill for 10-15 minutes, then taste and adjust before serving to prevent the dip from becoming overly salty.
  • Let it chill. While the dip can be served immediately, resting it in the fridge for at least 20-30 minutes helps the flavors meld for a more balanced, cohesive taste.
  • Serve at the right temperature. Sour cream dips taste best lightly chilled, not ice cold. Let the dip sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes before serving so the flavors open up.

How to Serve Sour Cream Dip

This easy sour cream chive dip pairs beautifully with almost anything and instantly upgrades snacks, appetizers, and quick dinners. Serve it chilled and watch it disappear fast.

More delicious ways to use it:

  • Spread on sandwiches, wraps, or veggie pitas
  • Serve with grilled chicken, roasted salmon, or turkey burgers
  • Add to a snack board with olives, pickles, nuts, and cured meats
  • Use as a quick dip for chicken gyro, homemade doner kebab, or homemade nuggets

How to Store Simple Sour Cream Dip

  • Refrigerator: Store any leftover sour cream dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For the freshest flavor and brightest herbs, enjoy it within the first day or two.
  • Freezing Not Recommended: For the freshest flavor and texture, avoid freezing, as the dip may become watery or grainy once thawed.
  • Pro Tip: Before serving, give it a quick stir. Lemon juice can cause slight separation over time, but a quick mix will bring everything back together.

I came across this recipe by chance while reading your doner kebab recipe. I wasn’t sure whether to serve it with tzatziki or with this sour cream dip. In the end, I decided to try this dip, and it turned out really goodת perfect with the doner kebab inside a tortilla. Very refreshing and super easy to make, it took me exactly 2 minutes.
