Ingredients & Substitutions

Six eggs, a bowl of cottage cheese, a bunch of chives, small dishes of salt and mustard, and a red pepper grinder, all arranged on a white marble surface with each item labeled.
  • Large Eggs – The star of the show! Hard-boil them until just set for the best texture since overcooking can make the yolks dry and chalky.
  • Cottage Cheese – This swaps in for mayo, giving you the same creamy texture with way more protein. Full-fat (4%) cottage cheese gives the richest texture, but low-fat versions also work well if you prefer a lighter salad. For the smoothest results, blend it first or use a small-curd variety. If you’re not a fan of the texture, Greek yogurt makes a great (albeit tangier) substitute.
  • Dijon Mustard – Adds a subtle tangy kick that balances the richness of the eggs and cottage cheese. Yellow mustard works in a pinch, though the flavor will be milder and less complex.
  • Chives – These bring a mild onion flavor and a pop of fresh color without overpowering the dish. Green onions or a small amount of finely diced red onion are easy swaps.
  • Salt & Black Pepper – Simple seasonings that let the other ingredients shine. Feel free to swap in garlic powder or a pinch of paprika if you want to switch up the flavor profile.

How to Make Healthy Egg Salad With Cottage Cheese

Step 1: Cook the Eggs. Place your eggs in a saucepan and cover them with cold water by about an inch. Bring everything to a boil over medium-high heat, then cover the pan, pull it off the heat, and let the eggs hang out for 10-12 minutes.

Step 2: Chill the Eggs. As soon as the timer goes off, move the eggs straight into an ice bath and let them cool for at least 5 minutes. This makes peeling so much easier!

Step 3: Chop the Eggs. Peel your cooled eggs and roughly chop them into bite-sized pieces. If you’re after a smoother, finer texture, try grating them on the large holes of a box grater instead.

Step 4: Blend the Cottage Cheese (Optional). For an extra creamy, smooth egg salad, blend the cottage cheese for 20-30 seconds before adding it in.

Step 5: Mix It All Together. Add the chopped eggs to a bowl along with the cottage cheese, Dijon mustard, chives, salt, and black pepper. Stir until everything’s well combined and creamy.

Step 6: Chill and Serve. Dig in right away, or pop it in the fridge for 20-30 minutes to let the flavors meld. Enjoy it on toast, tucked into a sandwich or wrap, scooped up with crackers, or piled on top of a salad. Yum!

Expert Tips & Tricks

  • Don’t Skip the Ice Bath! Cooling your eggs quickly after boiling isn’t just about making them easier to peel, it also stops the cooking process right in its tracks, so you avoid that dreaded gray-green ring around the yolk.
  • Blend for a smoother texture. If you don’t love cottage cheese curds, blend the cottage cheese until smooth before mixing it with the eggs. You’ll get a creamier, more traditional egg-salad texture.
  • Drain Your Cottage Cheese. If your cottage cheese is on the watery side, give it a quick drain in a fine-mesh strainer before mixing. This keeps your egg salad nice and thick instead of runny. If you prefer a softer, creamier egg salad, skip this step.
  • Taste as You Go. Since cottage cheese brands vary in saltiness, taste your egg salad before adding extra salt. You might need less than you think.
  • Let It Chill for Best Flavor. While you can absolutely dig in right away, letting the egg salad sit in the fridge for at least 20 minutes lets all the flavors really come together.

Optional Variations & Dietary Adaptations

  • Add Some Crunch – Craving a little texture? Stir in 2-3 tablespoons of finely diced celery, chopped dill pickles, diced cucumber, finely diced red onion, or chopped radishes, or mix and match a few of your favorites.
  • Mix It Up – This high protein egg salad is basically a blank canvas, so have fun with it! Try stirring in smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, fresh dill, parsley, a squeeze of lemon juice, crumbled cooked bacon, hot sauce, sriracha, or everything bagel seasoning for a fun twist.
  • Make It Spicy – For those who like some heat, add a spoonful of harissa, a dash of cayenne, or some diced jalapeños to give your egg salad a spicy kick.
  • Go Mediterranean – Stir in chopped Kalamata olives, crumbled feta, sun-dried tomatoes, and a sprinkle of oregano for a fresh, Mediterranean-inspired spin.
  • Add Some Healthy Fats – Fold in a few slices of diced avocado or a drizzle of good olive oil for extra creaminess and a boost of heart-healthy fats.

How to Serve Cottage Cheese Egg Salad

This high protein egg salad is quick, satisfying, and endlessly adaptable to whatever you’re in the mood for, so don’t feel limited to just one way of enjoying it! Pile it high on thick slices of wholemeal spelt bread for a classic sandwich, or tuck it into a soft pita pocket with some fresh greens for a portable lunch.

It’s also fantastic scooped up with crunchy seed crackers or crisp cucumber slices for a lighter, low-carb snack. If you’re hosting brunch, try spreading it over toasted sourdough or a high protein cottage cheese bagel for an easy, crowd-pleasing bite.

For something a bit more substantial, spoon the egg salad over a bed of mixed greens or spinach for a protein-packed salad, or use it to stuff a ripe avocado half for a fun, low-carb twist. It also makes a great filling for lettuce wraps if you’re looking to keep things extra light.

Storage Instructions

  • Refrigeration: Once your cottage cheese egg salad is ready, transfer any leftovers to an airtight container and store it in the fridge, where it’ll stay fresh for up to 3-4 days. Since it contains dairy and eggs, it’s best kept cold, so try not to leave it out at room temperature for more than about 2 hours.
  • Freezing: Egg salad doesn’t freeze well—the texture of both the eggs and cottage cheese tends to become watery and grainy once thawed.
  • Boiled Eggs: If you’re planning to make this ahead of time, it’s totally fine to prep the eggs a day or two in advance and store them (peeled or unpeeled) in the fridge until you’re ready to mix everything together.

What to Do with Leftover Cottage Cheese

If you’ve got extra cottage cheese on hand, don’t let it go to waste! It’s a great addition to smoothies (like my blueberry cottage cheese smoothie or carrot cake cottage cheese smoothie), where it adds a creamy protein boost without changing the flavor much. For a quick snack, spread some on toast with a drizzle of honey and fresh berries.

You can also stir it into scrambled eggs, mix up a cottage cheese egg bake, or meal prep cottage cheese egg bites. If you’re craving something sweet, try making my cottage cheese ice cream, fudgy cottage cheese brownies or gluten-free cottage cheese chocolate chip cookies. The sky is honestly the limit!!

Notes

  • Blend or don’t blend? If you aren’t a fan of cottage cheese curds, simply blend the cottage cheese before mixing. It becomes smooth, creamy, and almost indistinguishable from a traditional egg salad dressing.
  • Should you drain the cottage cheese? Some brands of cottage cheese contain more liquid than others. If yours seems especially watery, you can drain off some of the excess liquid before mixing to prevent the egg salad from becoming too loose. This is completely optional, though. If you prefer a creamier, softer egg salad, it’s best to skip this step.
  • Which cottage cheese works best? Full-fat (4%) cottage cheese gives the richest texture, but low-fat versions also work well if you prefer a lighter salad.
  • Add crunch: If you like a little extra crunch, stir in 2–3 tablespoons of finely diced celery, chopped dill pickles, diced cucumber, finely diced red onion, chopped radishes, or a combination of your favorites.
  • Mix-In Ideas: This egg salad is easy to customize. Try adding smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, fresh dill, parsley, a squeeze of lemon juice, crumbled cooked bacon, hot sauce, sriracha, or everything bagel seasoning.
  • Storage: Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Do not freeze.

FAQs

Is egg salad with cottage cheese healthy?

Yes, making egg salad with cottage cheese is generally considered a nutritious swap. Cottage cheese adds protein while cutting the fat and calories you’d typically get from mayo, making this a lighter, higher-protein take on classic egg salad without sacrificing creaminess. When in doubt, consult a physician!

Can you use cottage cheese instead of mayonnaise?

Yes, absolutely! Cottage cheese is a great mayo substitute in applications like egg salad. It gives you that same creamy texture while adding extra protein and cutting down on fat, so you barely notice the swap—particularly if you blend it first.

Do eggs and cottage cheese go together?

I sure think so! Cottage cheese adds a lovely creaminess and tang that goes great with eggs.

Can egg salad be healthy?

Yes! Traditional egg salad is often made with a generous amount of mayonnaise, which can add quite a bit of fat and calories. For a lighter option, you can replace the mayo with cottage cheese. It keeps the egg salad creamy while adding extra protein, making this cottage cheese egg salad a filling and nutritious option.

  1. May I suggest blending the cottage cheese into a dip consistency rather than leaving the curds. I never thought of blending cottage cheese into a creamy consistency until I had a dip recipe suggest it.

    1. Hi Donna,

Thank you for the tip! I actually mentioned it in the recipe as well.

In that case, you might need to use a little less cottage cheese. Otherwise, your egg salad might end up watery, depending on the cottage cheese brand and fat percentage.

Just tried it, I added a few spices that I like in my egg salad, such as paprika and Tabasco.
    Really nice texture and flavor.
I used full fat cottage cheese.
    5/5 for me.

Never thought of adding cottage cheese to egg salad, but I just tried it and it was delicious!

Here’s how I adjusted it to my taste: I used the same ratio of cottage cheese to eggs, but I also added a touch of cayenne pepper and 1/4 of a very finely chopped onion. I served it in lettuce wraps to keep it low-carb. I also think it would be great with some crispy bacon!
