Ingredients:

  1. Bananas, sliced – Bananas provide a natural sweetness and a creamy texture when frozen, forming the base layer for the bark.
  2. Natural peanut butter – Whether you use homemade peanut butter or store-bought. Peanut butter adds a rich, nutty flavor and creamy consistency. Peanut butter is also a source of healthy fats and protein, contributing to the snack’s overall nutritional value.
  3. Dark chocolate – The dark chocolate adds a rich, slightly bitter contrast to the sweetness of the bananas and peanut butter. It also hardens when frozen, creating a satisfying crunchy texture.
  4. Peanuts, crushed – These add extra crunch and enhance the nutty flavor. Crushed peanuts also offer a dose of healthy fats and protein, boosting the snack’s nutrient content.

These ingredients work together to create a balanced and delicious snack that’s both nutritious and satisfying.

To properly store Frozen Chocolate Banana Bark and maintain its texture and flavor, follow these steps:

  1. After Freezing: Once the bark has been frozen for at least 1 hour and is fully set, remove it from the baking sheet.
  2. Cut into Pieces: Use a sharp knife to cut the bark into manageable, bite-sized pieces. This will make it easier to grab a quick snack later without thawing the entire batch.
  3. Use an Airtight Container or Freezer Bag: Place the cut pieces in an airtight container or freezer-safe zip-top bag. If stacking the pieces, separate layers with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  4. Label and Date: To keep track of how long the bark has been in the freezer, label the container or bag with the date.
  5. Store in the Freezer: The banana bark can be stored in the freezer for up to 2 weeks. After this period, the bananas may start to develop ice crystals and lose some of their texture, though it’s still safe to eat.

Quick Tips:

  • Do not thaw: Frozen Chocolate Banana Bark is best enjoyed straight from the freezer. Thawing may cause the bananas to become mushy and the chocolate to lose its crisp texture.
  • Serve immediately: When you’re ready to eat, simply grab a piece or two directly from the freezer and enjoy!

Can I use a different nut butter instead of peanut butter?

Yes, you can! Feel free to substitute peanut butter with almond butter, cashew butter, or even sunflower seed butter, or sesame seed paste for a nut-free version. Each option will provide a slightly different flavor, but all will maintain the creamy texture and nutritional benefits of healthy fats. Just make sure to use a natural nut butter without added sugars or oils to keep the recipe wholesome.

What type of chocolate is best for this recipe?

Dark chocolate is recommended because it balances the sweetness of the bananas and peanut butter. Ideally, use dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa for a richer flavor and added health benefits. However, if you prefer a sweeter bark, you can opt for semi-sweet or milk chocolate, though it will be less healthy. For a vegan version, ensure that your chocolate is dairy-free.

How long can I store the frozen chocolate banana bark?

Once frozen, the banana bark can be stored in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 2 weeks. For the best texture and flavor, it’s recommended to eat the bark within the first week. After that, the bananas may become overly icy, which could affect the texture.

Can I add other toppings to this recipe?

Absolutely! This recipe is versatile and can be customized to your taste. You can add toppings like shredded coconut, chia seeds, hemp seeds, or dried fruit. These toppings not only enhance the flavor but also boost the nutritional content of the bark, making it even more of a healthy snack.

Can I make this recipe vegan or gluten-free?

Yes, this recipe is naturally gluten-free. To make it vegan, use a plant-based dark chocolate without dairy ingredients. Also, ensure the peanut butter doesn’t contain honey or any other animal-derived products. With these simple swaps, you can enjoy a completely plant-based version of this healthy dessert.

  4. I make this all the time. I use PB2 and mix in some peanut butter to lower the calories. I also combine the peanut butter portion with low fat Greek yogurt to add more protein. It’s delicious!
